By the Unit.
Sixth Grade Mathematics focuses on problem-solving using rates/ratios and proportions, expanding students’ concept of number to the system of rational numbers, analyzing expression/equations, and developing an understanding of statistical thinking. Students will connect ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and use concepts of ratio and rate to solve a variety of problems, including real-word applications. Students will complete their understanding of division of fractions and extend their conceptual understanding of the number system to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers. Students will create and interpret expressions and equations and use them to solve a variety of problems. Students will also develop their understanding of statistical thinking and use their understanding of rate/ratios and equations to solve a variety of problems involving geometry. Throughout the course, students will be required use a variety of mathematical tools, communicate using precise mathematical language, and think critically/strategically. Much emphasis will be placed on the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice. Link: Math Reference Sheets |
